Joe Buck is set to make his return to nationally televised baseball broadcasts on opening day, March 27, 2024. He will be calling his first game since 2021, where the New York Yankees will face off against the Milwaukee Brewers at 3 p.m. EST on ESPN.
Buck, who served as the lead baseball announcer for Fox Sports from 1996 until 2021, has an impressive resume that includes calling 24 World Series. In 2022, he transitioned to ESPN to take on the role of commentator for “Monday Night Football.” As he steps back into the baseball booth, he will be joined by Joe Girardi from YES Network and Brewers analyst Bill Schroeder.
In a statement, Buck expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “Opening Day has always been a signature day on the sports calendar and, personally, it remains special. ESPN approached me with this one-off opportunity to help launch the season and it was a quick ‘yes.’ Joe and Bill are both great friends and better baseball minds, and I know they will carry the telecast, while I just plan to be along for the ride.” This marks his first game in a national capacity since the Braves clinched the championship against the Astros in Game 6 of the 2021 World Series.
Although Buck participated in a regional broadcast with Chip Caray last season for a matchup between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs, this will be his return to a larger audience. In addition to the Yankees-Brewers game, ESPN will feature another matchup on the same day, with the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, hosting the Detroit Tigers at 7 p.m. EST. That game will be covered by ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” crew, which includes Karl Ravech, Eduardo Pérez, David Cone, and Buster Olney.
