MILAN — AC Milan found themselves regretting the red card issued to Theo Hernandez for diving, as Feyenoord progressed to the Champions League Round of 16 at the expense of the once-renowned European champions, following a 1-1 draw in the second leg of their playoff on Tuesday.
Hernandez received his second yellow card in the 51st minute for the questionable dive, just as Milan was taking control after Santiago Giménez’s goal in the first minute equalized the aggregate score against his former club. In the initial leg of the playoff, Feyenoord had secured a 1-0 victory, leaving Milan with a mountain to climb.
Following Hernandez’s expulsion, Milan’s defensive presence faltered significantly. In the 73rd minute, Hugo Bueno delivered a cross that Julián Carranza headed into the net, leveling the match for Feyenoord and sealing a 2-1 aggregate win for the Dutch side.
On the same night, other playoff matches unfolded, including Bayern Munich facing Celtic with a 2-1 advantage, Benfica leading waitingly before a match against Monaco, and Atalanta holding a 2-1 lead over Club Brugge ahead of their encounter.
