DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In the ongoing Dubai Open, Elena Rybakina and Paula Badosa, both among the top seeds, secured their spots in the round of 16 on Tuesday as they showcased strong performances on the hardcourt.
Rybakina, seeded sixth, achieved a convincing victory over Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, Spain’s Badosa, the ninth seed, demonstrated her skill by defeating Belgium’s Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1 just before the onset of rain.
In another match being closely watched, No. 4 seed Jasmine Paolini was leading Eva Lys when play was halted. Paolini took control in the first set with a score of 6-2 and was in command at 6-5 in the second, holding a break point.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, organizers announced that matches would not resume until at least 12:45 GMT, allowing time for the courts to dry.
The match involving American Jessica Pegula, the fifth seed, was also suspended. Pegula was ahead 4-0 in the first set against Liudmila Samsonova when the rain interrupted the play.
Looking ahead, top seed Aryna Sabalenka is set to compete against Veronika Kudermetova, while Coco Gauff will take on her fellow American McCartney Kessler.
Additionally, No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek, who received a bye into the second round, is preparing to face former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in a highly anticipated match.
