MADRID — Egan Bernal, the former champion of the Tour de France, sustained a collarbone injury due to a crash during a race in Spain, as confirmed by his team on Monday.

The 28-year-old cyclist from Colombia was taken to a hospital following the accident at the Jaén Paraíso Interior Classic, which took place in Andalusia.

In their official announcement, British cycling team INEOS Grenadiers stated, “After a comprehensive evaluation at the hospital this evening following his accident at Clasica Jaen, Egan has been diagnosed with a fractured clavicle.” They also assured that he would receive specialized medical attention and that a detailed recovery plan would be established to aid his return to competitive cycling.

Just earlier this month, Bernal celebrated a significant triumph by winning his first race since enduring a life-altering accident during training in 2022. This victory occurred at the national time trial championship held in his home country of Colombia.

Bernal rose to prominence in the cycling world in 2019 when, at the young age of 22, he became the first South American to claim the prestigious Tour de France title. He later added the Giro d’Italia to his victories in 2021. However, shortly afterward, he faced a severe setback when he collided with a stationary bus during training in Bogotá. The incident resulted in multiple serious injuries, including a fractured right femur, broken right kneecap, several broken ribs, and vertebrae injuries, in addition to suffering from a punctured lung and chest trauma.
