MADRID — Egan Bernal, the 2019 Tour de France champion, sustained a broken collarbone following a crash during a race in Spain, as confirmed by his team on Monday.
The 28-year-old Colombian cyclist was admitted to the hospital after the incident took place at the Jaén Paraíso Interior Classic, which took place in Andalusia.

“In light of a thorough evaluation conducted at the hospital this evening following his incident at Clasica Jaen, Egan has been diagnosed with a fractured clavicle,” stated the British cycling team INEOS Grenadiers.
“He will continue to receive expert care from our medical team, and a detailed recovery plan will be established to facilitate his return to both training and competitive racing.”

Earlier in the month, Bernal celebrated his first victory since a severe accident during training back in 2022, winning the national time trial championship in Colombia.
Bernal rose to prominence in the cycling world in 2019 when he became the youngest winner of the Tour de France at just 22 years old, making him the first winner from South America in the race’s history.

In 2021, he added the Giro d’Italia title to his list of achievements. However, his career was jeopardized months later when he suffered a terrible crash into a parked bus while training in Bogota.
He sustained multiple severe injuries, including fractures to his right femur and kneecap, several ribs, and vertebrae, in addition to suffering a punctured lung and chest trauma.
