MESA, Ariz. — The Oakland Athletics have announced that manager Mark Kotsay has signed a contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2028 season, with an option for 2029.

This announcement was made on Monday, coinciding with the start of the team’s first full-squad practice for spring training.

At 49 years old, Kotsay is entering his fourth year as the manager of the Athletics, guiding the club through a transformative phase that has seen it shift from Oakland to Sacramento, California.

During this transition, the team will play its home games at a minor league facility for the upcoming seasons, with future plans to establish a permanent presence in Las Vegas.

Last season, the Athletics concluded with a record of 69-93, marking a significant improvement of 19 wins after a challenging 2023 campaign that ended with 112 losses.

Encouragingly, the team appears to be making positive strides, bolstered by an emerging young roster that features talents such as Brent Rooker, Shea Langeliers, Lawrence Butler, and JJ Bleday.

Rooker has already secured a $60 million, five-year contract with the team during the offseason, while right-handed pitcher Luis Severino has also joined the ranks, having signed a $67 million, three-year agreement.

These moves indicate a shift in the Athletics’ typically frugal spending culture, as they look to enhance their competitive edge within the AL West.

Kotsay’s previous contract extended from 2022 to 2024, and in November 2023, the organization activated his option for the 2025 season.

With this new contract extension, Kotsay now has increased job security as the franchise prepares to navigate its debut season in Sacramento.
