MESA, Ariz. — Mark Kotsay, the manager of the Athletics, has secured a contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2028 season, with an option for 2029. This agreement was made public on Monday, which coincided with the commencement of the team’s first full-squad training session of the spring.

Now in his fourth year with the Athletics, the 49-year-old Kotsay has navigated the franchise through a transformative period marked by significant changes, including the transition from Oakland to Sacramento, California. The team will be operating out of a minor league stadium for the next several years, with future plans to relocate to Las Vegas.

Last season, the Athletics posted a record of 69-93, showcasing a 19-game improvement over their previous year, where they faced a disappointing 112 losses. Signs of progress are evident as the team boasts a promising young roster featuring players like Brent Rooker, Shea Langeliers, Lawrence Butler, and JJ Bleday.

Recently, Rooker signed a notable five-year contract worth $60 million with the Athletics during the offseason, while right-handed pitcher Luis Severino agreed to a $67 million, three-year deal. These moves indicate that the often conservative franchise is ready to invest in talent as they aim to compete in the highly competitive AL West division.

Initially, Kotsay was under a three-year contract covering the 2022-2024 seasons. In November 2023, the Athletics opted to exercise his contract option for 2025, granting him increased job security as the team embarks on its new chapter in Sacramento.
