On Monday, a car in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon was hit by an Israeli drone strike, marking the most significant military action in the region since a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel was established in late November, as reported by Lebanon’s official news agency.
No immediate information regarding casualties has emerged, and the identity of the target is still unknown.
The Israeli military has yet to issue a statement regarding the strike, which comes just a day prior to a deadline for Israel to completely withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon, a stipulation of the ceasefire that concluded a protracted 14-month conflict with Hezbollah.
Video clips that have surfaced online depict the vehicle engulfed in flames, with the attack taking place close to a Lebanese army checkpoint and the municipal sports stadium in Sidon.
Initially, the withdrawal was scheduled for late January, but due to pressure from Israel, Lebanon agreed to postpone this to February 18. It remains uncertain if Israel will fulfill its withdrawal obligations by the upcoming Tuesday.
Despite the ceasefire, Israel has maintained a series of air strikes in areas of southern and eastern Lebanon, asserting that they are targeting military installations housing missiles and combat gear. Tensions continue to escalate as both Israel and Lebanon have accused each other of breaching the terms of the ceasefire agreement.
