On Monday, the conflict that began following Hamas’ assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, reaches its 500th day. Currently, a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip has been in effect for almost a month. However, this truce is scheduled to conclude in early March, and there remains uncertainty about whether the involved parties will opt to extend it, initiate discussions for a more permanent resolution, or revert to hostilities.
The impact of this long-standing conflict has resulted in significant human loss and destruction. Various sources, including the Israeli government, the Gaza Health Ministry, and United Nations agencies, provide a grim overview of the toll incurred.
As of the onset of the conflict, approximately 1,200 individuals were killed in Israel on October 7, 2023. In addition, 251 hostages were taken into Gaza during this time, with 73 hostages still held captive, three of whom were abducted prior to the escalation. It is also believed that 36 hostages have died while in Gaza, which includes one individual taken before the conflict began.
In Gaza, the casualties have been staggering, with reports indicating that over 48,200 Palestinians have lost their lives. The Gaza Health Ministry highlights that this figure does not differentiate between combatants and civilians but notes that more than half of the deceased were women and children. Moreover, over 111,600 Palestinians have sustained injuries during the conflict.
Israeli military losses since October 7, 2023, include approximately 846 soldiers. On the other hand, over 10,000 rockets have been launched at Israel from Gaza since the beginning of the war. The displacement of people is also alarming, with around 90% of Gaza’s population forced to leave their homes. Since the ceasefire took effect, 586,000 Palestinians have moved into northern Gaza. Meanwhile, the peak of attacks from Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon displaced over 75,500 Israelis.
The infrastructure in Gaza has suffered extensive damage, with over 245,000 housing units reported as either damaged or destroyed. Primary roads in the region have been affected to a large extent, with more than 92% either damaged or destroyed. Additionally, over 84% of health facilities in Gaza have also faced serious harm.
As the situation continues to evolve, the future remains uncertain, with many hoping for an end to the violence and a solution to the humanitarian crisis.
