DALLAS — On Sunday, the Dallas Mavericks announced the suspension of an unnamed employee in connection with a serious incident involving assistant coach Darrell Armstrong, who has reportedly been arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
A report from the local television station WFAA revealed that Dallas police responded to a call during the early hours of Saturday morning. According to sources familiar with the situation, the 56-year-old Armstrong was involved in a dispute with a woman, during which he allegedly struck her with a firearm and issued threats to shoot her.
As of now, Dallas police have not responded to inquiries regarding the incident. It remains uncertain whether Armstrong has legal representation available for commentary. WFAA also reported that Armstrong has already posted bond following his booking on Saturday morning.
In a statement, the Mavericks indicated that they are aware of the events surrounding the incident and are in the process of collecting further information. The NBA has not yet issued a comment concerning the matter.
“The employee has been placed on administrative leave while we await the resolution of legal proceedings,” the team’s statement read. “This situation is currently being evaluated by the appropriate legal authorities. Because of this, we will allow the legal processes to proceed without any further comments until the conclusion of these proceedings.”
Darrell Armstrong played for the Mavericks toward the end of his 14-year career, participating in two seasons with the team. He was part of the roster during the 2005-06 season, which saw the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals before ultimately losing to Miami. He is in his tenth full season as an assistant coach with the Dallas franchise.
