CORK, Ireland — Michael O’Sullivan, an Irish jockey, sadly passed away on Sunday due to injuries he received from a fall earlier this month during a race. His age was just 24.

O’Sullivan encountered the accident while riding Wee Charlie in a race that took place in Thurles, Ireland, on February 6. He was one of three riders who fell at the last fence, requiring immediate medical attention on-site before being transported to Cork University Hospital.

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) expressed their deep sorrow in a statement regarding O’Sullivan’s passing. They extended heartfelt condolences to his family, partner, friends, and colleagues in the racing community during this difficult time.

Dr. Jennifer Pugh, the chief medical officer for the IHRB, shared that O’Sullivan passed away early Sunday morning with his family by his side at the hospital. She acknowledged the dedication of the multidisciplinary medical teams that provided comprehensive care to O’Sullivan, both during the race and in the hospital.

In a display of compassion, O’Sullivan’s family decided to donate his organs, a choice that reflects profound generosity and will positively impact the lives of other patients and their families.

Due to the tragedy, the race scheduled for Sunday at Punchestown, along with several other events, was canceled out of respect for the young rider.

Darragh O’Loughlin, CEO of the IHRB, commented on O’Sullivan, noting his exceptional talent and popularity among fellow riders. He remarked that O’Sullivan would be deeply missed by everyone in the racing community who had the privilege of knowing him.
