TEMPE, Ariz. — In a thrilling showdown on Saturday night, TCU managed to edge out Arizona State with a score of 74-70, marking the Sun Devils’ fifth consecutive defeat. Freshman Jace Posey emerged as a standout for TCU, contributing a season-high of 20 points off the bench, while Noah Reynolds played a critical role by sinking a crucial 3-pointer late in the game, finishing with 19 points.
The game saw Arizona State rally back with a 14-4 scoring surge, where BJ Freeman played a significant part with two 3-pointers and a layup, helping to equalize the score at 67 with just 43 seconds left on the clock. However, Reynolds responded efficiently, making a vital 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining, which was followed by Vasean Allette’s perfect 4-for-4 performance at the free-throw line in the closing seconds to seal TCU’s victory.
Posey exhibited impressive shooting skills, making 6 of 8 attempts from the field along with successfully hitting 8 of 10 from the charity stripe. He also added six rebounds and two steals to his stat line. Reynolds also had a solid outing, converting 6 of 14 shots with a pair of 3-pointers and converting 5 of 7 free throws. Allette contributed significantly as well, ending the game with 14 points and nine rebounds.
On the opposing side, Freeman emerged as the leading scorer for Arizona State, dropping 21 points including five 3-pointers. His teammates, Alston Mason and Shawn Phillips Jr., each tallied 12 points, with Mason distributing nine assists and Phillips snagging eight rebounds. Basheer Jihad also made his presence felt with 11 points.
At halftime, TCU led 38-31, buoyed by Reynolds’ and Posey’s essential contributions. TCU’s lead extended to 59-46 after Allette made two successful free throws with 9:52 left in the game.
Looking ahead, TCU will prepare to host No. 12 Texas Tech on Tuesday, while Arizona State is set to welcome No. 6 Houston on the same day.
