Brazil set to welcome upcoming BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro this July

The Brazilian government revealed on Saturday that Rio de Janeiro will host the next BRICS summit on July 6-7.
This will be significant as Brazil takes on the chairmanship of the BRICS group of developing nations and will hold this position until 2025.
The government’s statement emphasizes that Brazil’s focus will be on advancing global governance reforms and enhancing partnership among countries in the Global South.

BRICS, an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, was founded in 2009, with South Africa joining the group in 2010 to provide a counterweight to the Group of Seven, which comprises the world’s major industrialized nations.
In the previous year, the bloc saw an expansion with the inclusion of new members such as Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
Additionally, Saudi Arabia has received an invitation to join, while nations such as Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have formally sought membership, indicating a growing interest from other countries.

Moreover, Indonesia has recently been acknowledged as one of BRICS’ 11 members, while Nigeria has gained recognition as a “partner country,” a status introduced at the 2024 summit held in Kazan.
Brazil has stated that partner countries are also welcome to partake in the summit and may have the opportunity to engage in additional meetings, provided there is a consensus among the member nations.

Highlighting the importance of this gathering, Brazil’s foreign minister, Mauro Vieira, asserted that the summit will be an opportunity to make significant decisions regarding development, cooperation, and enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of these nations.

It is noteworthy that President Donald Trump has issued threats to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS countries should they take actions perceived as undermining the value of the U.S. dollar.
In response, BRICS leaders have expressed a firm resolve to create an alternative payment system that operates independently of the dollar.
