Omier secures 81st double-double as Baylor edges out West Virginia in overtime, 74-71

WACO, Texas — Norchad Omier recorded his 81st career double-double, contributing 17 points and 10 rebounds, as Baylor triumphed over West Virginia with a score of 74-71 on Saturday, with all of their overtime points coming from the free-throw line.

Baylor maintained the lead for over 30 minutes during the game, which was marked by an intense back-and-forth matchup that included 10 lead changes and 11 ties.

In overtime, Langston Love secured the lead for Baylor by sinking two free throws, and freshman Robert Wright III added two more to extend the advantage with 1:31 remaining. Amani Hansberry responded with a jumper to narrow the gap to two points, but Love answered by hitting another pair of free throws just under one minute left on the clock.

With 40 seconds remaining, Omier converted one of his two foul shots, while Wright made the first of two attempts to elevate the score to 73-69. Javon Smalls then followed up for West Virginia with two free throws. In the final seconds, Jalen Celestine made the first of his two attempts at the line to seal the game with only five seconds left.

With 36 seconds left in regulation, Hansberry grabbed a rebound from a stray shot by Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe, who subsequently committed a foul, which permitted Hansberry to tie the contest with 24 seconds remaining, ultimately pushing the game into overtime.

Love was impressive at the line, finishing a perfect 12-for-12 while tallying 17 points overall for Baylor (16-9, 8-6 Big 12). Wright also had a strong performance with 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Celestine chipped in with 10 points after going 4 for 5 at the free-throw line.

Leading the charge for West Virginia (15-10, 6-8) was Smalls, who scored 22 points and delivered six assists, whereas Toby Okani recorded 19 points alongside seven rebounds and three assists.

Next, Baylor will host No. 13 Arizona on Monday, while West Virginia prepares to face Cincinnati on Wednesday.
