DOHA, Qatar — Amanda Anisimova triumphed at the Qatar Open on Saturday, clinching her third career title and her first since 2022.
In the final, Anisimova faced off against former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, securing a victory with a score of 6-4, 6-3, despite the match being interrupted twice by rain.
Following the second delay, Anisimova rallied to win the final three games, marking her as the first American since Monica Seles to capture the Doha title back in 2002.
“It was definitely quite stressful, especially with the rain at 3-3,” Anisimova remarked. “I was focused on getting through it. The weather was tough for both of us, but that particular game felt crucial, and I’m glad I came out on top.”
Currently ranked 41st in the world, Anisimova is on the verge of breaking into the top 20.
On the other hand, Ostapenko, who ranks 37th and was competing in her 17th final, was unable to claim her ninth career singles title, partly due to an unusually high number of 10 double faults during the match.
