LINCOLN, Nebraska — The Nebraska football community is mourning the loss of Greg Sharpe, the iconic play-by-play commentator who had been the voice of Nebraska football since 2007. His family shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on Saturday, revealing that the 61-year-old died after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Sharpe’s health had declined after he revealed his diagnosis ten months ago; however, he remained dedicated to his work and managed to commentate several games last season. His family expressed their gratitude, highlighting the joy he brought to countless fans during his 17 seasons covering Husker football and baseball. “While his passion and energy on the call of Husker football and baseball brought joy to so many, it comforts us to know that his legacy will live on through these moments and the relationships he built,” they stated. They emphasized that his close friends and family knew him as a loyal individual committed to those he loved.

Originally hailing from Olathe, Kansas, Sharpe attended Kansas State University, where he served as the voice for K-State football and basketball from 1996 to 2002. In 2007, Nebraska brought him on board to call the final three games of the season before officially naming him the permanent announcer the following year.

In December, he received recognition as Nebraska’s Sportscaster of the Year from the National Sports Media Association. Most recently, the athletic department honored him by renaming his workspace in the press box as the “Greg Sharpe Radio Booth.”

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen expressed his sorrow over Sharpe’s passing, stating, “This is a tough day for everyone. It’s not just for those who were close to Greg, but also for Husker fans who cherish their memories of his iconic play-by-play calls.” Dannen fondly remembered Sharpe as an incredible person and a friend to all, declaring, “He defined what it meant to be a Husker, and he will always be a Husker.”

Sharpe leaves behind his beloved wife, Amy, and their three daughters: Emily, Campbell, and Taylor.
