A court in Moscow has decided to keep a U.S. citizen in pre-trial detention for 30 days on suspicion of drug smuggling, according to statements released by the Moscow courts press service on Saturday. This announcement comes shortly after a recent prisoner exchange between Moscow and Washington, which the White House has described as a positive diplomatic development amid ongoing tensions related to the situation in Ukraine.
The individual, named Kalob Wayne Byers, was apprehended when customs officials discovered cannabis-infused marmalade in his luggage. Reports indicate that the 28-year-old American is accused of trying to smuggle a “significant amount” of drugs into Russia, as stated by Russia’s Federal Customs Service and reported by the Interfax agency. He was detained after arriving at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport from Istanbul on February 7.
According to the Russian Telegram channel Mash, which is known to have links to security services, if Byers is found guilty, he could face a prison sentence of up to seven years. As of now, there has been no response from the U.S. State Department regarding this case.
Earlier this month, the prisoner swap between the United States and Russia involved Alexander Vinnik, a Russian man who was facing Bitcoin fraud allegations in the U.S., being sent back to Russia in exchange for American Marc Fogel. Fogel, a teacher from Pennsylvania, had been detained in 2021 while traveling to Russia for work. He received a 14-year sentence due to possession of what his family and advocates claim was medically prescribed marijuana. In December, the Biden administration classified Fogel as wrongfully detained.
Additionally, in a surprising shift, former President Donald Trump recently altered U.S. policy towards Ukraine, stating that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to initiate discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict, following a lengthy direct phone conversation between the two leaders.
