MESA, Arizona — Matt Shaw, who hails from Massachusetts, was informed about Alex Bregman’s recent decision to sign with the Boston Red Sox through a text message from a friend. Shaw, who has many friends among Red Sox fans, couldn’t help but laugh when he referred to the situation as a “win-win” for them, suggesting that this move could potentially bring him one step closer to making his Major League Baseball debut.

With Bregman’s new contract in Boston, it now appears that Shaw has the opportunity to secure the third base position for the Chicago Cubs as they prepare for their opening game in Japan next month. The Cubs had shown interest in Bregman before he finalized his agreement with the Red Sox, which paved the way for Shaw’s potential elevation in the roster.

During the Cubs’ first comprehensive team workout of spring training, Shaw faced some setbacks due to a left oblique strain. However, manager Craig Counsell offered reassurance by categorizing the injury as minor and labeling Shaw as day-to-day. Though other candidates are in the mix for third base, Shaw is currently in the lead for the position.

“The decision regarding Bregman gives us as a team increased clarity moving forward,” Shaw shared. “I believe that is beneficial for everyone involved.”

After having an impressive collegiate career at the University of Maryland, Shaw was selected by the Cubs as the No. 13 overall pick in the 2023 amateur draft. He quickly became one of the team’s most promising prospects, having posted a solid .284 batting average along with 21 home runs, 71 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases in his inaugural professional season.

Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner praised Shaw’s keen self-awareness as a player, acknowledging his strengths and areas needing improvement. “He has an excellent ability to evaluate himself,” Hoerner remarked. “He adapts very well to new challenges, which is impressive.”

One of the key transitions Shaw faces is adjusting to the third base position. Originally drafted as a shortstop, he only made three starts at third base before receiving consistent playing time there in the previous year. Shaw gained additional experience at third during his time with the U.S. team in the Premier12 tournament, but he recognizes there’s still more to learn.

“I’ve been focusing on refining some aspects of my arm slot recently,” Shaw noted. “It feels much better now, and I think it looks improved as well. Overall, I’m filled with excitement for what’s ahead.”

If he secures the third base role, Shaw could be part of an outstanding defensive infield. With Hoerner and shortstop Dansby Swanson both recognized as Gold Glove winners, and Michael Busch offering reliability at first base, the team’s defensive strength could significantly support Shaw during his transition to the major leagues.

Swanson commended Shaw’s natural talent as a baseball player and expressed his willingness to provide guidance whenever needed. “I’m here for him, whether he needs questions answered, advice, or simply someone to listen,” Swanson expressed. “However, I plan to let him find his way, as I believe that experience will serve as the best teacher.”
