LIEVIN, France — On Thursday, Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the indoor mile world record, surpassing Yared Nuguse’s previous record that was set just five days earlier during the Millrose Games.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist further established his dominance in the sport by also setting the world indoor 1,500-meter record at the Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais Trophée EDF in northern France.

Ingebrigtsen completed the mile in an impressive time of 3 minutes and 45.14 seconds, which was a significant improvement over Nuguse’s time of 3:46.63 achieved in New York. Notably, during the race, he passed the 1,500-meter mark with a time of 3:29.63, which is nearly a second faster than his previous record on the same track from 2022.

Expressing his joy, the 24-year-old Ingebrigtsen remarked, “It feels amazing. This is what happens in Lievin. I’m a very happy man. You have to be focused for the whole race. It’s tough, but it’s worth it.” The records he set will need to undergo a ratification process.

Ingebrigtsen’s exceptional performance adds to his storied career, having secured gold in the 5,000 meters at the Paris Olympics last summer, alongside his triumph in the 1500 meters during the Tokyo Olympics.
