SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A tragic incident unfolded in northeastern Puerto Rico when gunmen opened fire on a residence, resulting in the deaths of two children and injuries to four others, according to police reports released on Thursday.
The shocking event took place late Wednesday in the town of Río Grande, a community grappling with the aftermath of the violence. Authorities have confirmed that an 8-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl lost their lives in the attack. Among the injured is a 12-year-old girl, who is the sister of the deceased children and is currently hospitalized. Alongside her, three adults aged 27, 51, and 66 were also wounded in the incident. Notably, the mother of the three children is among those who sustained injuries, as reported by law enforcement.
At the time of the shooting, there were several individuals present in the house. This included a man who had been accused in a homicide case from 2022 and was due to appear in court soon, as shared by Sharon Ruiz, a police commander, during a press briefing. The motivation behind this violent act remains unclear, and police stated that a significant number of bullet casings were found at the crime scene, indicating the ferocity of the attack.
Authorities have initiated an ongoing investigation into the shooting, but as of now, no arrests have been made in connection with this disturbing crime.
