NEW ORLEANS — A scruffy rescue dog from New Orleans, renowned for dodging multiple attempts at recapture over a lengthy period, has finally been caught and returned to a safe environment as of Tuesday.

Scrim, a 17-pound mixed breed, captured the hearts of many across Louisiana after he initially evaded capture in April. The little dog roamed freely around the city for several months until he was ultimately apprehended. In October, he gained even more attention when he jumped out of a second-story window, an incident that was recorded on video and quickly shared online.

Throughout his adventurous escapade, Scrim managed to survive both a hurricane and frigid blizzard conditions. A dedicated group of volunteers followed his movements, covering an area of 57 square miles, utilizing wildlife surveillance cameras and a community-driven map to track sightings.

He was eventually found and captured using a cat trap, according to Michelle Cheramie, who leads the animal rescue organization Zeus’ Rescues and spearheaded the efforts to locate Scrim. Cheramie, who previously worked in information technology, dedicated herself to animal rescue after losing her home in Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She expressed her passion for rescuing animals, stating, “I was born to rescue.”

Upon his return, a thrilled Cheramie held Scrim close after giving him a much-needed bath. The dog appeared calm, and a vet confirmed that he was in good health. During his earlier months on the run, Scrim had sustained lacerations and was discovered with what seemed to be tiny bullets embedded in his skin.

“He went through so much. I needed to ensure he was safe. He is not a feral dog,” said Cheramie. “I want to provide him with a space where he can enjoy long walks, access veterinary care, and be away from loud, frightening noises.”

As Scrim relaxed beneath cozy blankets on a couch, the volunteers who had spent countless nights searching for him gathered at Cheramie’s home, eager to interact with the beloved pooch. They shared stories of their persistent but ultimately fruitless efforts while Scrim soaked up their affection.

Cheramie is taking every precaution now that Scrim is back home. All doors and windows in her house have been securely locked while arrangements are made to transition Scrim to a new long-term family, whose identity she has chosen to keep private. Additionally, Scrim has been equipped with a GPS collar and AirTag tracking device for safety in case he escapes again.

Before Scrim moves to his new home, Cheramie intends to relish their time together. “He’s going to sleep in my bed tonight, and it’s going to be the most wonderful experience,” Cheramie said. “It feels incredible to have him back in my arms. This is everything I’ve ever wanted.”
