Catcher Elias Díaz has signed a one-year contract with the San Diego Padres, ensuring a base salary of $3.5 million, along with the prospect of earning an additional $500,000 through performance incentives.
For the current season, Díaz’s salary is set at $1.5 million, and his contract also includes a mutual option for the 2026 season valued at $7 million, along with a buyout clause of $2 million.
In terms of his performance bonuses, Díaz can earn $50,000 for reaching 100 plate appearances, and then progressively increase his earnings through further thresholds: $100,000 each for 200, 300, and 400 plate appearances, and $150,000 for exceeding 500 plate appearances in the season.
Last year, the 34-year-old player had stints with both San Diego and Colorado, where he posted a batting average of .265, hit six home runs, and drove in 39 runs over 96 games. He had signed a three-year contract worth $14.5 million with the Rockies but was released by the team on August 16 before joining the Padres.
Díaz, who made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2015, boasts a lifetime batting average of .251, having accumulated 62 home runs and 297 RBIs across 724 games in his career.
In a notable achievement, he earned the MVP title during the All-Star Game in 2023, hitting a two-run homer that contributed to the National League’s 3-2 win. That season, he concluded with a batting average of .267, hitting 14 home runs, and achieving a career-high 72 RBIs in 141 games with the Rockies.
