SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Jamaican authorities have apprehended a popular dancehall musician who is believed to have created a track that allegedly endorses illegal activities.
Marlon Plunkett, also known by his stage name “KipRich,” voluntarily surrendered to the police on a Monday. Officials claim that his song pays homage to Othneil “Thickman” Lobban, a notorious gang leader in Jamaica who was recently shot dead by law enforcement. This incident sparked a wave of violence in areas surrounding the capital, Kingston, prompting law enforcement to elevate the threat alert for police personnel to a critical level.
In response to the claims, Plunkett maintains his innocence, stating in an interview with a local publication that his lyrics do not aim to incite violence against the authorities. He emphasized that the intent behind his music was misinterpreted.
Plunkett is set to face legal proceedings later this month.
Jamaica is known for having one of the highest rates of homicide globally and also reports a significant number of killings involving police officers within the Americas, as per the findings of Amnesty International.
