CINCINNATI — Although Pete Rose remains on baseball’s permanent ineligible list, his legacy will be honored in a notable way by the Cincinnati Reds this season.

The team recently shared an image of a commemorative patch featuring Rose’s famous No. 14 on social media, accompanied by the message, “14 on our side all season,” along with a heart emoji.

Pete Rose, who passed away in September at 83, is celebrated for spending 19 of his 24 years in Major League Baseball with the Reds. He concluded his storied career in 1986, holding the record for the most hits in MLB history with 4,256.

Known as “Charlie Hustle,” Rose was selected as an All-Star 17 times and played on three World Series-winning teams. His accolades include being named the National League Most Valuable Player in 1973, capturing three batting titles, and earning two Gold Glove awards for his defensive prowess.

Following an investigation by Major League Baseball, it was revealed that Rose had bet on the Reds to win various games while simultaneously playing and managing the team from 1985 to 1987. In response to the findings, he voluntarily accepted a spot on the permanently ineligible list in 1989. Subsequently, in 1991, the Hall of Fame enacted a rule that prevents individuals on this ineligible list from appearing on Hall of Fame ballots.

In 2015, Rose’s request for reinstatement was rejected by then-Commissioner Rob Manfred.

As of now, Major League Baseball has not issued a statement regarding the Reds’ tribute to Rose.
