MESA, Arizona — As teams gear up for spring training, Alex Bregman, a two-time All-Star third baseman, stands as one of the few prominent free agents still available. This situation is particularly intriguing for the Chicago Cubs, who are currently navigating uncertainty regarding their third base position.
There is a compelling case for Bregman joining the Cubs, especially given the passionate fan base eager for a return to the postseason after four consecutive seasons without playoff participation. However, whether this scenario will become a reality remains to be seen.
“I wouldn’t rule out anything,” remarked Jed Hoyer, the Cubs’ president of baseball operations, hinting at the possibility of adding significant talent.
The Cubs kicked off their spring training early, becoming the first Major League Baseball team to do so with a practice that included both hitting and throwing under the warm Arizona sun. Over the offseason, Chicago made headlines by acquiring All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros. Still, questions linger about whether the team has done enough to compete for an NL Central title after finishing with an 83-79 record in the previous year.
Tucker, 28, has established himself as one of the premier outfielders in Major League Baseball over the past four seasons, contributing to the Astros’ World Series victory in 2022. His addition to a roster that already showcases talents like Ian Happ, Dansby Swanson, and Seiya Suzuki adds depth and competitiveness.
Moreover, the Cubs have strengthened their bullpen with the recent signings of veterans Ryan Pressly and Ryan Brasier. Second-year manager Craig Counsell commented on the progress, stating, “I think we’ve gotten better, but you’ve got to go play the games. We’ve got to compete and go through the journey with each other. Do our best to player develop, minimize injuries, keep roster building, all those things.”
The Cubs, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, are beginning their spring training earlier than most teams, preparing for two regular-season games in the Tokyo Series set for March 18-19, which is more than a week ahead of the first games for other MLB teams.
This imminent matchup highlights the contrasting strategies of the two high-profile franchises in recent seasons. The Cubs have taken a more measured approach to contract commitments, focusing on a thoughtful roster build, while the Dodgers have adopted a spendthrift strategy, significantly increasing their payroll.
