STOCKHOLM — The arrival of a new member in the Swedish royal family has been joyously announced by Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia. They welcomed their fourth child, a daughter, into the world.
This little princess was born on Friday in Stockholm, although details regarding her name and first photograph have yet to be made public. According to the royal couple, their newborn weighs 3,645 grams (equivalent to 8 lbs) and measures 49 centimeters (approximately 19 inches) in length.
Prince Carl Philip is the son of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, and he stands fourth in the royal succession order. He and Sofia Hellqvist exchanged vows in June 2015. Their newborn daughter now joins her three older brothers: Prince Alexander, aged 8, Prince Gabriel, aged 7, and Prince Julian, who is 3 years old.
The family received warm wishes from Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who sent a congratulatory statement expressing best wishes for the family’s happiness.
To celebrate the joyous occasion, a traditional salute of 21 gunshots marked the royal birth at midday local time on Saturday, as reported by Swedish news agency TT.
While King Carl XVI Gustaf serves as the head of state of Sweden, his role is primarily ceremonial, devoid of any formal political authority. The Swedish royal family enjoys a high level of popularity among the public, and the monarchy maintains strong support despite the nation’s overarching commitment to egalitarian principles.
