STOCKHOLM — A joyous announcement has been made from the Swedish royal family as Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia welcome their fourth child, a baby girl.
The little princess was born in Stockholm on Friday, although her name and a photograph have yet to be disclosed. She weighs 3,645 grams (8 lbs) and measures 49 centimeters (19 inches) long.
Prince Carl Philip, their father, is the son of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and stands fourth in line for the throne. He and Sofia Hellqvist tied the knot in June 2015. With the arrival of this new member, the family now includes her three older brothers: Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel, and Prince Julian.
In a statement, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson extended his warm wishes to the royal family. “We wish the family all the best,” he expressed.
Although King Carl XVI Gustaf holds the position of head of state in Sweden, his role is primarily ceremonial, and he does not hold political power.
The royal family enjoys significant popularity within Sweden, and the monarchy benefits from a broad base of support, which is notable given the generally egalitarian values that permeate society in this Nordic nation.
