GALLE, Sri Lanka — Australia is close to achieving a 2-0 series sweep against Sri Lanka following an impressive century by Alex Carey that propelled the visitors into a strong position during the second Test on Saturday.
On the third day of play, the Australian team amassed a commanding score of 414 before being dismissed just prior to the lunch break, establishing a first-innings lead of 157 runs.
Sri Lanka, who suffered a heavy defeat in the first Test by an innings and 242 runs—marking their most significant loss in Test cricket history—was under pressure in this match as well.
Carey displayed exceptional skill, particularly with his ability to sweep, effectively countering a Sri Lankan bowling attack heavily reliant on spin. While the home side tried to limit scoring by crowding the leg side, Carey responded impressively with daring reverse sweeps, forcing the bowlers onto the back foot.
Carey finished with a remarkable career-high score of 156, which stands as the highest score achieved by an Australian wicketkeeper in Asia, breaking Adam Gilchrist’s previous record of 144.
Additionally, Steve Smith made a significant impact with a well-crafted 131 runs—marking his second century of the series. Unlike Carey’s fluid batting, Smith experienced some anxious moments early on. However, once he found his rhythm, he contributed to a monumental 259-run partnership for the fourth wicket—setting a record for the highest partnership at that position by an overseas team in Sri Lanka.
On the bowling side for Sri Lanka, Prabath Jayasuriya stood out once more, taking five wickets, marking the 11th five-wicket haul of his short but impressive Test career. Notably, nine of these have been achieved in Galle, where he has shown remarkable prowess.
Jayasuya made an early impact on the day, removing both overnight batsmen in quick succession. First, he dismissed Smith, who was caught behind for 131, followed by Josh Inglis, who was bowled two balls later.
Ultimately, Carey also departed while attempting another sweep which did not connect. His dazzling innings came off just 188 deliveries, featuring 15 boundaries and two sixes, placing Australia firmly in control of the match on a pitch that is already demonstrating considerable turn.
