Members of the Spanish and Danish royal families came together in Athens on Friday to celebrate the wedding of Nikolaos, son of Greece’s late King Constantine II, and his bride, Chrysi Vardinogianni.
Attendees at the ceremony included Emeritus Queen Sofia and Princess Cristina from Spain, along with Princess Benedikte of Denmark and her two children, Princess Alexandra and Prince Gustav.
Since the abolition of the Greek monarchy in 1974, the former royal family had been without citizenship, but recent negotiations with the government allowed them to reclaim their Greek citizenship last December. This was achieved as they formally renounced any claims to their former royal titles, adopting the surname “de Grèce,” which translates to “of Greece” in French.
Nikolaos, at 55 years old, is the third-born child of Constantine and his wife, Anne-Marie. The couple exchanged vows during an intimate ceremony held at the Orthodox Church of Saint Nicholas Ragavas, located in Athens’ picturesque Plaka district. Approximately 200 guests gathered outside the church to share in the couple’s joy.
Both Nikolaos and Vardinogianni have previous marriages under their belts. For their wedding day, Vardinogianni donned an elegant lace gown with short cap sleeves complemented by a long, flowing white veil, and was escorted to the church by her father, ship owner Giorgos Vardinogiannis.
