A small aircraft tragically crashed onto an avenue in Sao Paulo on Friday morning shortly after lifting off from a nearby private airport. According to the local firefighter department, the accident resulted in at least two fatalities among the passengers.
The incident occurred in the bustling Barra Funda neighborhood located on the city’s west side, not far from downtown. A fragment of the aircraft struck a bus, leading to injuries for a woman onboard, while another piece of debris hit a motorcyclist. Both individuals are currently receiving medical attention.
In addition, reports indicated that four more victims at the crash site were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries, but officials have yet to disclose the identity of those who lost their lives in the incident.
Surveillance footage captured by a local television network revealed the crash, showing the plane crashing into the avenue just a short distance from an intersection where many cars were halted.
Visuals from various media outlets depicted the plane’s fuselage engulfed in flames alongside the bus, as firefighters worked diligently to put out the fire. The area surrounding the avenue features numerous office buildings and is conveniently located near a major bus, train, and subway station.
As of now, the cause of the airplane’s descent and subsequent collision with the avenue—approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) from its departure point—is still under investigation. The aircraft was reportedly en route to Porto Alegre, situated in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.
