Charlottesville, Va. — In an impressive display of teamwork and skill, Ta’Niya Latson led the No. 22 ranked Florida State to a resounding 101-68 victory over Virginia on Thursday night, marking the team’s sixth consecutive win.
Latson shone brightly with a game-high 27 points and a career-best 12 assists, affirming her position as the nation’s leading scorer with an average of 26.1 points per game. The Seminoles, now with a record of 19-4 and 9-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, also saw strong contributions from Makayla Timpson, who recorded 18 points, eight rebounds, and matched her career-high with eight blocks. O’Mariah Gordon added 15 points while Amaya Bonner provided a notable 12 points off the bench.
For Virginia, which holds a record of 12-12 overall and 4-8 in the conference, Paris Clark and Kymora Johnson both scored 16 points, while Breona Hurd contributed 14 points. Johnson additionally made a mark with eight rebounds and six assists.
The Seminoles showcased their shooting prowess, finishing 10 of 26 from beyond the arc and shooting an overall 52%, despite a less effective 7-of-18 performance in the final quarter. Florida State was adept at capitalizing on turnovers, converting 18 forced mistakes by Virginia into 25 points while limiting their own turnovers to just seven.
Sydney Bowles set the tone for the game with a layup right at the start, followed by a 3-pointer four minutes in to establish an early 11-0 lead for Florida State. The quarter concluded strongly for the Seminoles with an 8-0 run, finishing at 26-9.
Though Virginia managed to hold their ground in the second quarter, they were still trailing at halftime, 49-31. The Seminoles burst into the third quarter with an impressive 11-0 run and dominated the scoring, outpacing the Cavaliers 34-12 to hold a commanding 83-43 lead at the end of the third period.
Virginia struggled significantly in the opening frame and the third quarter, shooting only 3 of 18 and 4 of 18 from the field, respectively. They faced difficulties finding their rhythm, missing their initial six shots and later experiencing a stretch of eleven missed attempts in the third quarter.
Looking ahead, Florida State will be back in action on Sunday for a home game against No. 14 N.C. State, while Virginia faces Virginia Tech at home on the same day.
