SYDNEY — Joe Schmidt has made the decision to extend his role as head coach of the Wallabies until after the 2025 Rugby Championship. This commitment provides Rugby Australia with the necessary time to secure a replacement for the coaching position.
Schmidt took over the coaching duties from Eddie Jones following Australia’s lackluster performance at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Initially, Schmidt’s contract was set to conclude after the upcoming test series against the British and Irish Lions, scheduled for July and August. There was also the potential for extending his contract through the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which is set to be hosted by Australia.
However, a recent statement from Rugby Australia confirmed that the 59-year-old Schmidt would continue to lead the Wallabies during their annual series against South Africa, New Zealand, and Argentina, with plans for him to step down in early October. Peter Horne, Australia’s director of high performance, mentioned that the overall positive influence Schmidt has had on both the playing and coaching staff contributed to the decision for him to remain on after the Lions series. Schmidt, while enjoying his role, expressed his desire to spend more time with his family.
The Wallabies are expected to welcome a new head coach prior to their test match in Japan on October 25, which will precede their European tour at the end of the year. This incoming coach will mark the fifth individual to take on the Wallabies’ helm in the last six years.
The international season for the Wallabies is set to commence against Fiji on July 6, followed by the British and Irish Lions on consecutive weekends in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney starting on July 19. The team will engage in Rugby Championship tests between August 16 and October 4.
Schmidt’s tenure began positively, highlighted by three consecutive victories and the integration of new players into the national squad. He explored various player combinations, which yielded improved performances and higher team confidence. The 2024 season wrapped up with a triumph over England at Twickenham, albeit concluding with a narrow 22-19 defeat to Ireland in Dublin and a win-loss record of 6-7.
