Five-time Olympian Lauren Jackson to take on advisory position with Australia’s WNBL

SYDNEY — Lauren Jackson, a legendary figure in basketball and five-time Olympian, is set to transition her impressive career off the court by becoming a “special advisor” for the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) in Australia.

At 43, Jackson boasts a remarkable record, including being a three-time MVP with the WNBA’s Seattle Storm and claiming seven championships in the WNBL. She will commence her part-time role with the league’s new ownership group, which includes NBL Group and Wollemi Capital Group Syndicate, effective April 2.

Expressing her enthusiasm about this new chapter, Jackson, who concluded her playing career after last year’s Paris Olympics, remarked, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of this next chapter for the WNBL. This league has been at the heart of my journey in basketball. Now I have the chance to help create an exciting future where our talented players thrive in a professional environment worthy of their skill and passion.”

Jennie Sager, the chief executive of WNBL, emphasized the importance of having Jackson on board, calling it a “no-brainer.” Sager praised Jackson as a pioneering figure who understands the nuances necessary for achieving success. She noted, “Her deep connection to the league, her experience as a player, and her vision for its future will be instrumental in helping us raise the bar and deliver a bigger, bolder WNBL.”

In addition to her role with the WNBL, Jackson will also maintain her position with Basketball Australia, where she serves as the head of women in basketball. Her extensive experience and insight are expected to provide significant contributions to the sport’s growth and development in Australia.
