CAGLIARI, Italy — Lazio achieved a notable victory on Monday, claiming a 2-1 triumph over struggling Cagliari, which propelled them into fourth place in Serie A.
Boasting a standout performance from Mattia Zaccagni, who contributed both a goal and an assist, Lazio extended their unbeaten streak against Cagliari to an impressive 20 matches, demonstrating their dominance over this particular opponent in the league.
This recent success marks Lazio’s longest unbeaten run against any Serie A team, surpassing their previous best of 19 consecutive games without a loss against Inter Milan, a streak that lasted from 1996 to 2005.
Zaccagni opened the scoring for Lazio in the 41st minute with a precise finish following excellent play from Elseid Hysaj, giving the visitors a crucial lead going into halftime.
Cagliari fought back in the second half, with on-loan striker Roberto Piccoli equalizing with a well-placed header at the back post just ten minutes after the break.
However, the advantage was short-lived as Argentine forward Taty Castellanos netted the winning goal for Lazio only nine minutes later, restoring their lead and ultimately securing all three points.
With this victory, Lazio sits two points clear of Juventus in the league standings. In contrast, Cagliari remains precariously positioned just one point above the relegation zone, falling to fourth from the bottom of the table.
