MANCHESTER, England — Manchester United has officially made its first addition under the management of Ruben Amorim, signing Danish defender Patrick Dorgu from Lecce for an estimated fee of 30 million euros (approximately $31 million) on Sunday.
The 20-year-old Dorgu is known for his role as an attacking left-sided wing back, making him a strategic acquisition for Amorim, who has sought to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation. However, the team’s performance under this formation has not met expectations since Amorim’s arrival from Sporting Lisbon in November.
According to Manchester United, Dorgu’s move is contingent upon obtaining a visa and registering with the club. He has signed a contract that extends until June 2030, with an option for an additional year.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Dorgu stated, “I am eager to work alongside Ruben Amorim; his vision for this team and the club’s future is incredibly inspiring. There’s a clear pathway laid out for my growth, and I believe Manchester United is the ideal environment for me to reach my potential and achieve my lofty ambitions.”
During his time at Lecce, Dorgu participated in 57 matches and made his international debut for Denmark in September, scoring with his very first touch.
Jason Wilcox, the technical director of Manchester United, praised Dorgu as “a truly exciting talent,” highlighting his “strong defensive and attacking capabilities, adaptability, and work ethic, which will make him an integral part of Ruben Amorim’s squad.”
Since taking charge, Amorim has utilized players such as Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui in wing-back positions, although they are primarily natural full-backs and may not fully possess the attacking attributes required for the wing-back system.
