UDINE, Italy — Authorities have taken into custody eight supporters of Udinese after they participated in a violent encounter with a train transporting rival fans.
Approximately 1,200 supporters of Venezia were on their way home following a 3-2 defeat to Udinese when a group estimated to consist of 50 individuals launched an attack at Basiliano station, located around 14 kilometers (nine miles) from Udine.
The attackers hurled stones, flares, and other projectiles at the train, effectively obstructing its progress and instigating chaos as some Venezia fans attempted to exit the train. A significant fight ensued during the confrontation.
As a result of the violence, six fans from Venezia sustained injuries, with two requiring hospitalization for treatment. Additionally, three police officers present at the scene were hurt.
Among those arrested, five individuals were identified as Austrian nationals, along with a Bosnian citizen who resides in Austria, an Albanian, and an Italian.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident in an effort to identify additional participants in the violence.
