LOS ANGELES — During the team’s annual fan fest, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed optimism about Shohei Ohtani’s return to pitching for the club, tentatively slated for May. Roberts clarified that Ohtani will not be participating in the upcoming Japan Series against the Chicago Cubs scheduled for March 18-19 in Tokyo.

The talented two-way player has not taken the mound in a major league game since August 2023 while playing for the Los Angeles Angels. His pitching career was momentarily derailed when he underwent surgery on his left shoulder after a dislocation occurred during a stolen base attempt in the World Series against the New York Yankees on November 5. “He looks really strong,” Roberts commented, referencing recent footage of Ohtani that didn’t appear to reflect the aftermath of shoulder surgery.

The Dodgers are set to begin their spring training camp in Arizona on February 10. Ohtani mentioned through a translator that he feels he is on track with his recovery, having maintained a consistent workout schedule. “I’m really looking forward to being on time for spring training and the season,” he shared. Despite his positive outlook, Ohtani admitted he couldn’t predict the precise timing for his return to pitching duties.

“This shoulder surgery is more intricate than the elbow surgery,” he explained, noting the different challenges he faces during rehabilitation, particularly regarding his range of motion and the lingering effects on his labrum from the procedure. The determination of his pitching timeline will become clearer following his initial bullpen session, after which he expects to have a better gauge of when he may return to the mound.

Freddie Freeman, the World Series MVP, recently resumed hitting following his ankle surgery performed on December 5, which involved the removal of chipped cartilage. Describing the injury as quite serious, Freeman acknowledged that while he has not yet been cleared to run, he’s optimistic about participating in the Tokyo games.

Meanwhile, Clayton Kershaw has initiated a throwing program as negotiations continue regarding his contract for the forthcoming season. The three-time Cy Young Award winner, approaching his 37th birthday, underwent surgeries on his foot and knee in early November. His 2023 season was cut short due to persistent issues with his left big toe, which ultimately caused him to miss the playoffs. Just prior to undergoing surgery, Kershaw opted out of his player contract, making him a free agent.

The crowd at fan fest rallied for a potential return of utilityman Kiké Hernández, demonstrating their enthusiasm through chants. General manager Brandon Gomes noted that discussions about signing Hernández are still alive, remarking that “we’ve never closed the door to Kiké.” He added that any potential decision would consider what’s best for Hernández and his family.

As for Roberts, he enters the final year of his current contract, with the Dodgers exploring the possibility of an extension. After signing a three-year deal in March 2022, Roberts has enjoyed success with the team, achieving a regular-season record of 851-506. Under his guidance, the Dodgers have reached the playoffs each year since 2016, claiming four NL pennants and two World Series championships. Despite facing criticism for two straight first-round playoff exits, overcoming numerous injuries and securing a World Series victory against the Yankees has shifted some of that pressure. “It’s good to be liked,” Roberts remarked, reflecting on his relationship with fans.
