BOSTON — In a thrilling finish, Boston College edged out Florida State 77-76 on Saturday, marking the end of a six-game losing streak. The Eagles made a remarkable comeback, scoring five crucial points in the last seven seconds of the game. Chad Venning contributed by hitting a put-back jumper, while Chas Kelley III intercepted a misdirected in-bounds pass and successfully connected on a three-pointer to clinch the victory.
Boston College found itself trailing by eight points with less than a minute left on the clock, with a score of 70-62. However, in a swift turnaround, Donald Hand Jr. converted a three-point play, followed by two free throws from Jamir Watkins of Florida State. Fred Payne and Hand then each hit two free throws to narrow the gap to just three points. With a quick response, Malique Ewin made two free throws for Florida State, but Payne answered back with a three-point play, bringing the score to 74-72. Although Ewin managed to score from the line, Venning capitalized on a loose ball after blocking Payne’s layup and made it 76-74. In the closing moments, A.J. Swinton’s in-bounds pass for Florida State went astray, allowing Kelley to retrieve the ball and sink the decisive three-pointer.
Boston College (10-11, 2-8 ACC) began the match with a promising 5-0 lead; however, they lost their advantage when Florida State took a 15-14 lead with 13:22 remaining in the first half.
Hand emerged as the standout performer for Boston College, scoring a career-high 31 points and securing nine rebounds. Payne also made a significant impact off the bench, contributing 14 points and hitting all five of his free throw attempts.
On the Florida State side (13-9, 4-7), Jamir Watkins led the scoring with 19 points, marking his 20th double-digit scoring game out of 22. He also crossed the 900 career points threshold. Ewin was flawless from the free-throw line, going 8-for-8 and finishing with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Swinton added 10 points from the bench.
Looking ahead, Florida State will face Notre Dame on Tuesday, while Boston College is set to host No. 21 Louisville on Wednesday.
