Authorities in Greece announced on Friday that they have apprehended a woman suspected of orchestrating online auctions to sell ancient Greek artifacts internationally, targeting markets in countries such as the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and Italy.

The arrest took place in Athens and was executed by police officers specializing in the fight against the trafficking of antiquities. While the woman is described as a foreign national, no additional identifying information has been released.

During a search of her residence, law enforcement officials confiscated several ancient items, including pottery shards, pieces of figurines, and a statuette depicting a satyr, a mythological being from Greek tradition.

The suspect has been directed to a public prosecutor for potential charges, though additional information regarding the case has not yet been disclosed.

Greek legislation imposes strict penalties for the unauthorized transfer of ownership of antiquities, with offenders facing prison sentences of up to two years. More serious violations can lead to imprisonment for as long as ten years.
