FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys have decided to retain tight ends coach Lunda Wells, marking him as the first individual to officially join Brian Schottenheimer’s newly formed coaching staff following the departure of Mike McCarthy.
Wells initially joined the Cowboys alongside McCarthy in 2020 after spending eight seasons with the New York Giants. Schottenheimer, who was brought on board as a consultant in 2022, has since been elevated to the head coaching position after serving two years as the offensive coordinator.
During his tenure with the Giants, Wells held the position of tight ends coach for his last two seasons before stepping into the same role with the Cowboys.
Moreover, Dallas has welcomed five new assistants from various teams who were not with the Cowboys last year. Notably, Matt Eberflus returns for a second term as the defensive coordinator after being dismissed as head coach of the Chicago Bears just 12 games into the 2024 season.
In addition, special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen joins from the San Francisco 49ers, having had a brief and tumultuous stint as the team’s defensive coordinator before being let go after just one season.
Other new members added to the coaching staff include linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi, defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton, and defensive passing game coordinator Andre Curtis. These moves illustrate the Cowboys’ commitment to reshaping their coaching strategy as they prepare for the upcoming season.
