SYDNEY — In a busy international rugby calendar for 2025, the Wallabies are set to square off against Japan in a test match scheduled for October. This encounter will take place in Tokyo at the National Stadium on the 25th of October. Historically, Australia has maintained a perfect record against Japan, winning all six encounters between the nations, although their last match in Japan occurred back in 2021.

This test match marks the first clash between the two teams since Eddie Jones stepped down as the Wallabies’ coach following a disappointing Rugby World Cup performance in 2023. Jones subsequently returned to Japan, taking on the role of head coach for the Japanese men’s rugby team.

Kensuke Iwabuchi, chairman of the Japanese rugby federation, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming match. He highlighted the significance of the Australian team’s visit as it will bring back memories of the 2019 Rugby World Cup, which showcased an exciting atmosphere thanks to the contributions of both Brave Blossoms supporters and the Australian contingent.

The Wallabies will kick off their international season earlier in July, starting with a match against Fiji on the 6th. This will be followed by a series of highly anticipated matches against the British and Irish Lions over consecutive weekends in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney, commencing on July 19. Following these encounters, the team will participate in the Rugby Championship tests against reigning World Cup champions South Africa, as well as New Zealand and Argentina, scheduled between August 16 and October 4.

As for the Wallabies’ coaching situation, Joe Schmidt is under contract to lead the team through the upcoming series against the Lions, but he has not publicly committed to an extension to guide the team through to the 2027 World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia.
