Dodgers secure reliever Kirby Yates with a $13 million, one-year deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers have bolstered their bullpen by signing veteran right-handed pitcher Kirby Yates to a one-year contract worth $13 million. This move, made public on Thursday, reflects the team’s strategy to enhance its pitching depth following their success in the World Series.

To facilitate Yates’ addition, the Dodgers have designated fellow right-handed pitcher Ryan Brasier for assignment, creating space on their 40-man roster. This strategic adjustment continues the Dodgers’ efforts to assemble a strong bullpen for the upcoming season.

Yates, now 37 years old, had an impressive season with the Texas Rangers last year, boasting a record of 7-2, a striking 1.17 ERA, and an impressive 33 saves. The previous December, he signed a $4.5 million, one-year contract with Texas, reflecting his value in the league.

Over the span of his career, Yates has compiled a record of 26 wins and 21 losses, along with a 3.17 ERA and 95 saves across 422 relief appearances. His baseball journey has seen him play for several teams, including Tampa Bay, the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Angels, San Diego, and Atlanta. Yates is not only a reliable pitcher but also a two-time All-Star, originally drafted by Boston as a 26th-round pick in 2005.

Yates reached new heights in 2019 with the San Diego Padres, ending that season with a record of 0-5, a remarkable 1.19 ERA, and leading the majors with 41 saves. That year was marked by a career-high of 101 strikeouts over 60 and two-thirds innings pitched.

As for Brasier, he had a modest showing last season, achieving a record of 1-0 and a 3.54 ERA in 29 appearances, which included four games as a starter. His designation for assignment marks a significant change for the Dodgers as they continue to refine their roster in anticipation of the new season.
