OTTAWA, Ontario — In a thrilling matchup on Thursday night, Alex Ovechkin closed in on Wayne Gretzky’s legendary NHL goal-scoring record by netting his 23rd goal of the season during the Washington Capitals’ 5-4 overtime defeat against the Ottawa Senators. Ovechkin’s latest goal brings his impressive career total to 876, leaving him just 19 goals shy of Gretzky’s all-time mark of 894 goals in the league.
The 39-year-old Russian superstar made an impact with a powerful long-range wrist shot that reduced the deficit to 4-3 with 6:59 remaining in the third period. He assisted teammate Dylan Strome’s equalizer just a minute and a half later, showcasing his ability to deliver in crucial moments. However, the Capitals’ hopes were dashed when Thomas Chabot scored the game-winner for Ottawa at 1:46 into overtime.
The Senators displayed a diverse offensive attack, highlighted by a penalty shot goal from Josh Norris in the second period. Other contributors included Ridly Greig, Shane Pinto, and Jake Sanderson, although Pinto also had a missed opportunity on a separate penalty shot. Ottawa’s goaltender Anton Forsberg was instrumental in the victory, making 31 saves.
For Washington, Strome led the offense with two goals, while Connor McMichael also found the back of the net. Goalie Charlie Lindgren was credited with 29 saves during the contest.
In terms of special teams play, the Capitals struggled with their power play, converting only once on six opportunities. Conversely, the Senators excelled with two power-play goals, including the score during the penalty shot.
Looking ahead, the Washington Capitals will be facing off against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday night, while the Ottawa Senators prepare to host the Minnesota Wild on the same evening.
