Miguel Almirón is making a comeback to Atlanta.
On Thursday, Atlanta United announced that they have secured the signing of the Paraguayan midfielder after completing a transfer from Newcastle United for an undisclosed amount.
Almirón originally left Atlanta in 2019, joining the Premier League club for what was then the highest transfer fee in MLS history at $26 million.
His most impressive campaign with Newcastle came during the 2022-23 season, where he netted 11 goals.
In total, he recorded 30 goals and 22 assists across 223 appearances in all competitions throughout his time there.
Newcastle coach Eddie Howe expressed gratitude towards Almirón, stating, “On behalf of the club, I want to thank Miggy for everything he has given us during our time together.
He has been the ultimate professional and a significant contributor to some of our most memorable moments in recent seasons.
He is a fantastic individual, and we will greatly miss him, but this is the appropriate move at this time for him and his family, and we wish them all the best.”
Almirón first joined Atlanta in 2017 as a designated player and played a key role in helping the team secure the MLS Cup title in 2018.
He was honored as the 2017 MLS Newcomer of the Year, and he is a two-time All-Star and a two-time finalist for the league MVP award.
Over his two seasons with Atlanta, he contributed 22 goals and 33 assists.
The contract he signed with Atlanta will extend through 2027, with an option for the 2028 season.
He will take up a Designated Player and international roster spot.
Chris Henderson, Atlanta’s Sporting Director, commented on Almirón’s return, stating, “He’s a dynamic attacking player with a proven track record in our league, as well as at the highest levels in Europe, participating in the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League with Newcastle.
We are excited to add someone with his talent, experience, and competitive spirit to our squad as we continue to enhance our roster for 2025.”
