Cam Ward has added another achievement to his already impressive college football career, as he was recently named the recipient of the Manning Award, recognizing him as the best quarterback in the nation. The former Miami standout, who is strongly projected to be the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft after leading the nation’s top offense this past season, views this accolade as a valuable stepping stone into his professional career.
“We have an exceptional young man who had an outstanding year at Miami,” football icon Archie Manning said. “Their offense was explosive all season long. He is now gearing up for the NFL draft, where he’s set to have a promising opportunity ahead.”
Among the 11 quarterbacks with 25 or more touchdown passes in the current NFL season, three — Jayden Daniels from Washington, Joe Burrow of Cincinnati, and Baker Mayfield of Tampa Bay — are previous winners of the Manning Award. This reinforces the prestigious nature of the award and its potential benefits for aspiring professionals.
Ward is optimistic about the impact of this award on his future. “I believe it’s going to be immensely beneficial for me,” he stated. “Examining past winners, particularly last year’s recipient, Jayden Daniels, and his successful rookie season, it’s clear that this award can open doors. Maintaining connections with the Mannings is invaluable; they are readily available to offer guidance. This award should positively influence me in the long term.”
Having became the 20th recipient of this accolade, Ward has the distinction of being the first Miami quarterback to earn the Manning Award, which was established by the Sugar Bowl to recognize the college achievements of the Manning family. The voting committee includes the three Mannings along with a panel of journalists.
Ward concluded his college tenure boasting a record 158 touchdown passes at the Division I level (FBS and FCS). With a remarkable total of 18,189 passing yards — 6,908 at Incarnate Word, 6,968 at Washington State, and 4,313 at Miami — he stands third in NCAA history, surpassed only by Case Keenum and Dillon Gabriel.
In his only season with the Hurricanes in 2024, he shattered Miami’s record books. He departs the program as the single-season record holder for passing yards, completions (305), touchdown passes (39), and completion percentage, finishing with a career average of 67.2%.
Reflecting on his time, Archie Manning commented, “Looking back, Cam would agree that an additional year in college football equips you much better for the transition to the NFL. Cam has done things the right way, and I see him having a bright future ahead.”
Once a zero-star recruit, Ward has transformed into a legitimate NFL prospect, contending for the Heisman Trophy, earning All-American honors, and now being regarded as the frontrunner for that coveted No. 1 draft spot.
“Hard work can change your circumstances, regardless of where you start,” Ward shared. “You need to put in the effort, take determined steps, and make the most of your opportunities when they come.”
Despite spending just under a year with the Miami program, Ward leaves behind a legendary status. His achievements will be immortalized on a banner in the Miami indoor practice facility as a reminder of his contributions as an All-American.
The Hurricanes wrapped up the season with a 10-3 record, narrowly missing a spot in both the College Football Playoff and the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.
“I wish I had more time at Miami to capture a championship, whether it’s the ACC or a national title,” Ward reflected. “But I believe everything happens for a reason. The teammates I had this year are unmatched, both on and off the field. The unity we shared, whether in the hotel or locker room, is what I will miss the most.”
