DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have bolstered their bullpen by signing experienced right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle to a one-year contract valued at $7.75 million. This move comes as the team looks to build on their recent success after making the playoffs last season for the first time in ten years.
Kahnle, who is 35 years old, had a mixed record last season with the New York Yankees, posting an 0-2 win-loss record alongside a commendable 2.11 earned run average (ERA) and one save in 50 appearances. Over the course of 42 2/3 innings pitched, he struck out 46 batters while issuing 19 walks.
Scott Harris, the Tigers’ president of baseball operations, expressed enthusiasm for the addition of Kahnle, noting that he brings a unique skill set to the team. “Tommy offers us a different dimension in the bullpen,” Harris remarked. “He has a remarkable changeup that remains effective even when hitters anticipate it; it can either lead to strikeouts or generate weak ground balls. His talent is truly exceptional.”
In a related transaction, the Tigers have designated right-hander Alex Faedo for assignment. Faedo, 29, contributed to the team last season with a 5-3 record and a 3.61 ERA across 37 games, which included six starts.
During the playoffs last year, Kahnle allowed a total of three runs, with two being earned, over 8 2/3 innings across nine appearances, showcasing his performance under pressure. In his postseason career, he holds a 2-1 record along with a 3.00 ERA in 27 relief outings.
Kahnle has an overall regular-season record of 10 wins and 14 losses, with eight saves and a 3.47 ERA across 390 games, all coming in relief roles. His career highlights include tenures with teams such as the Colorado Rockies (2014-2015), Chicago White Sox (2016-2017), New York Yankees (in 2017-2020 and 2023-2024), and the Los Angeles Dodgers (2022).
