The Kansas City Current have officially extended the contract of Temwa Chawinga, the 2022 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Most Valuable Player, for an additional three years.
The announcement made on Wednesday ensures that the talented forward from Malawi will remain with the Current until the conclusion of the 2028 season.
In her inaugural season with the Current, Chawinga achieved remarkable success, leading the league by scoring an impressive 20 goals—setting a new NWSL single-season record.
She also earned the prestigious Golden Boot award for her outstanding performance during the season.
In her own words, Chawinga expressed heartfelt gratitude for the support she has received from the team. “My team has been good to me and they treated me well last season. My teammates are kind, my coach is amazing, and my KC community has been incredible,” she shared in a statement issued by the organization.
“All the support, it feels like home here. That’s why I decided to extend my contract with the KC Current.”
The 26-year-old made headlines with an extraordinary eight-game scoring streak, and she also became the first player to score against each opposing team within a single season since the NWSL increased its number of teams to ten.
Additionally, Chawinga provided six assists during the season, showcasing her versatility on the field.
Caitlin Carducci, the general manager of the Current, emphasized the importance of securing Chawinga’s long-term commitment. “Securing Temwa’s long-term future in Kansas City was a significant priority this offseason,” Carducci stated. “She had an amazing debut season, but both Temwa and our club feel that we are just getting started in reaching our potential together.”
Chawinga’s previous agreement with the Kansas City Current was set to expire following the 2025 season.
The Current had a strong showing last year, concluding the season with a record of 16 wins, 3 losses, and 7 draws, placing them fourth in the league standings.
Their campaign progressed to the playoff semifinals, where they were eventually eliminated by the championship-winning Orlando team.
