The New York Mets have reached an agreement with right-handed relief pitcher Ryne Stanek on a one-year contract, a source close to the discussions revealed on Wednesday.
The source requested anonymity as the deal depends on a successful physical examination and has not yet been officially announced.
MLB.com was the first to report on Stanek’s signing.
Last season, the Mets obtained Stanek from the Seattle Mariners, trading away minor league outfielder Rhylan Thomas in the process.
During the regular season with the Mets, Stanek struggled, registering a 6.06 ERA over 17 games.
However, he gained confidence and reliability as a reliever during the postseason, contributing effectively.
In a total of eight innings pitched across seven playoff appearances, the 33-year-old pitcher allowed just three earned runs while racking up eight strikeouts.
With this signing, Stanek will become part of a bullpen that includes standout closer Edwin Diaz and left-handed setup man A.J. Minter.
The Mets are looking to strengthen their pitching lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season.
