STOCKHOLM — The Swedish national ice hockey team has made a roster adjustment for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, with Philadelphia Flyers’ goaltender Samuel Ersson stepping in as a replacement for Jacob Markstrom of the New Jersey Devils, who is sidelined due to injury.
This change was confirmed on Wednesday by Sweden’s national team coach, Sam Hallam, as the tournament is set to start in less than two weeks. Sweden’s first match will be against Canada on February 12 in Montreal, followed by games against Finland on February 15 and the United States on February 17 in Boston.
At 25 years old, Ersson will join fellow goalies Filip Gustavsson from Minnesota and Linus Ullmark from Ottawa on the Swedish roster. Markstrom is expected to be out for a minimum of a month due to a lower-body injury. This will mark Ersson’s fifth opportunity to represent Sweden at the international level, with his last participation being in the 2024 World Championships, where he played a pivotal role in securing a bronze medal for his country.
Additionally, the Swedish Hockey Federation may need to address further personnel issues, as both Vegas Golden Knights center William Karlsson and Minnesota Wild defenseman Jonas Brodin are also dealing with injuries that could affect their availability.
On the Canadian side, there has been a notable withdrawal as well, with two-time Stanley Cup champion defenseman Alex Pietrangelo announcing his exit from the tournament last week. The Golden Knights revealed that Pietrangelo’s decision was made to address a health concern and to better prepare for the remainder of the NHL regular season, despite the fact that the 35-year-old continues to suit up for games with the team.
