LEVERKUSEN, Germany — Bayer Leverkusen has officially brought Argentine midfielder Emiliano Buendia to their squad on a loan deal from Aston Villa, aiming to fill the void left by the injured Martin Terrier.

The club announced the signing on Wednesday, noting that the 28-year-old Buendia has committed to Leverkusen until the end of the current season, which runs through June 2025. Although the specifics of the loan arrangement were not detailed, reports suggest that an option to secure Buendia on a permanent basis for approximately 20 million euros has been included in the agreement.

Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes praised Buendia’s skill set, describing him as a well-rounded player who approaches the game with passion and assertiveness. “He has experience playing over 100 matches in the highly competitive Premier League, and we believe he will be a great asset as we pursue our objectives,” Rolfes stated.

The necessity for this signing arose when Terrier was sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a torn Achilles tendon incurred during Leverkusen’s match against Borussia Mönchengladbach earlier this month, where they recorded a 3-1 victory.

Buendia’s involvement in the Premier League has been limited this season, appearing primarily as a substitute in 12 matches, following a challenging previous campaign marked by a knee injury.

Expressing enthusiasm about joining the Bundesliga champions, Buendia noted, “Leverkusen is a fantastic team known for playing attractive football, and I am confident that I can contribute to the club’s achievements moving forward.” He also mentioned that prior to his loan move, he had renewed his contract with Aston Villa after joining from Norwich City in 2021.

The club and its supporters are hopeful that Buendia’s addition will bolster their attacking lineup as they navigate the remainder of the season.
